Fueled by soaring vocals, roaring guitars, and a healthy dash of feminine rage, The Misnomers weave through the lanes of glam rock and vaporwave.
But to call this Austin-based project a band is a bit of a, well, misnomer. It’s spearheaded by singer/songwriter/keyboardist Elisa Regulski, which in case you’re wondering, is pronounced “eee-LISS-uh REE-gull-skee.”
Filling out the sound is a rotating cast of Austin musicians, including producer Brandon Torio, synth player Creighton Moench, drummer Clayton Stroup, and guitarist/bassist/saxophonist Heath Allyn.
Elisa spent her early 20s singing opera and showtunes, and she grew up on the sounds of classic rock trailblazers like Heart, Joan Jett, and Queen. So when she started creating her own music, it naturally veered into a theatrical direction.
“As great as it is, I’ve never been the kind of person to casually sing at the crook of a piano,” Elisa said. “There’s something thrilling about playing off a rowdy crowd.”
Elisa does this regularly with nostalgic party band, Saved by the ‘90s, and Austin-based B-52s tribute, Mock Lobster, but she found that writing her own music is even more cathartic and rewarding.
Elisa wrote the Misnomers’ debut single “Number on Me” in a frenzy of frustration. What started out as a middle finger to the sexist entertainment industry turned into an introspective look at her addiction to the victim mindset.
The Misnomers released “Number on Me” on December 13, 2023 and will release a full EP in the fall of 2024.
