Jean Caffeine

Jean Caffeine made a zine and made the scene as a punk in San Francisco. She drummed for all female bands in SF and NYC. She moved to NYC with the dream of being a DJ. At Club 57, where she spun records and played with a Velvet Underground tribute band, she was recruited by Ann Magnuson to drum for the performative and percussive Pulsallama who opened shows for the Clash and were sampled by hip hop artist Danny Brown. A live Pulsallama LP came out in 2020 on Modern Harmonics.
A move to Austin re-branded Jean as a front person and songwriter in the y’allternaive outfit, Jean Caffeine’s All Nite Truckstop. She shared stages with Lucinda Williams, Mo Tucker, Mojo Nixon, and Rev Horton Heat. Jean may be the only Austin artist that shared stages with Townes Van Zandt and Brian Jonestown Massacre. Jean kept a beat for RL Burnside at a party on her back porch. That party is credited with being the first SXSW day party. If you look carefully you can see Jean’s prone body in Slacker and hear a few notes of her song, “Jesus is Coming Soon to a Theatre Near You”. She also contributed animation to the film, “Waking Life”. Slowed but unstoppable, this spring Jean toured with Thyroids, a young Dallas punk band. The band backed Jean and played their own shows on the road and live on WFMU. A move in the early aughts re-located Jean to Hamilton and Toronto. There she worked at art institutions and played punked-up folk and roots shows backed by Mike Trebilcock (Killjoys and Simply Saucer). This fall Jean will play Supercrawl and other dates in Hamilton and Toronto with Mike in support of her Generation Jean album, a collection of singles and new tracks on Flak. Jean plays Ottawa and MTL with her buddy Patrick Hutchinson (Bare Bones, Bluesreel) You may not have heard of Jean Caffeine but you’d be a lot cooler if you had.”
“In a music world that often demands conformity, Jean Caffeine stands out as a true original, an artist who has lived multiple creative lives and continues to surprise and inspire…”-Beat “I don’t care what anyone else says, I’m a fan”.-Townes Van Zandt. — Current videos
