Cecilia + the Broken Hearts are a Chicanx Futurism band formed in Austin, TX. Their music explores connections between what it means to be Chicanx—being bi-cultural, experiencing family migration, the border, activism and community, and listening to cumbia, conjunto, orquesta, oldies, and rock en Español—with synthy pop and sci-fi to imagine alternate futures. The band was formed in 2014 and named after our accordionist’s daughter, Cecilia. If the band radiates a family vibe, it’s partially because the band boasts two siblings (Joe Rocha on guitar and Sara Rocha on bass) and a married couple (Sara Rocha on bass and Arturo Bartz on percussion. C+BH has been featured on NPR’s Alt-Latino and Tiny Desk All Songs Considered and Contest Tour (2016 and 2018), at Patricia Vonne’s Latinapalooza SXSW showcase and day shows (2022-2024), the Rancho Alegre Conjunto Festival at Stubb’s (2022), Fusebox’s Golden Hornet MXTX at Waterloo Amphitheatre (2022), Austin FC’s Murga supporter group’s Verde Fest season kickoff (2022, 2023), La Mujer festival at Austin’s Mexican American Cultural Center (2021, 2022) and received a City of Austin Proclamation (2019). They are currently recording their first full length album, produced by Iram Reyes’s Bad Hombre Studios through the support of the City of Austin Live Music Fund (2024). Members—Estrella de Leon (lead vocal), Melanie Morgan Gomez (accordion, flute, vocals), Joe Rocha (guitar)—all formerly of Como Las Movies (Austin, TX); Fabian Rincon (drums), currently of Nemegata (Austin, TX) and formerly of Como Las Movies (Austin, TX); Annie Vandervoort (keys, vocals); Sarah Rocha (bass) also of Joaquin and the Glowliners, the Bexar Brass Band, Radio Tierra, and Los Nahuatlatos (San Antonio, TX), and Arturo Bartz (percussion), also of Combo Cosmico and Radio Tierra, and formerly of Los Nahuatlatos (San Antonio, TX).
